The Wombats - Lets dance to joy division
Image -
This video has one setting which seems to be a basement. There are one group of additional characters, who are children, they are backing vocals and occasionally sing 'tear us apart' repeating after the band have said it themselves. Other then this there are no other characters, this could be because the band are not as majorly known so they need it to focus on them so people will know that they are the band members and they don't get confused with additional characters. The video shows them having a good time as they are constantly moving around and also the children backing vocalists are also jumping around along with the upbeat pace of the song. I noticed that a lot of low angle shots have been used, suggesting that they feel inferior or perhaps indestructible due to there young age and high energy. Close ups of the band instruments have also been used throughout, which helps the audience to feel more involved and perhaps closer to the action and this is also generic to the indie genre. Also the use of the hand held camera, makes the audience feel more involved. There was also a part in the video, where they are reacting out a very famous part of the video made by Queen 'bohemian Rhapsody' which suggests that they long to be as successful as them. The use of flashing lights, helps the audience to feel thta they are at a conecert or in a club rather than watching them at home.
Editing - At the beginning of the video the name of the band 'The Wombats' is displayed on the wall, and and emphasis of lines around the name appears a couple of time to show that this is what the band are called. Fast paced cuts are used to show how up beat the song is, the camera occasionally shakes to also show how up beat the song is. At around 1.17 minutes the setting goes to a black background with just the three band members standing still singing a slower paced bit of the song, you focus more on the words at this point at you're not distracted by the constant camera movements. Flashes of colour appear half way through to show how fun the band is and to show how much fun they're having. Straight cuts are used throughout, which are generic to the indie genre.
Target Audience - The up beat pace of the video makes me thing that the video would be targeted at a fairly young audience but other ages may enjoy it too. I think the young audience is also because the lyrics and video are clean but also because it's simple and easy to understand.
Mode of Address - There is no real mode of address as the band are constantly jumping around
Narrative - The narrative for this video is performance based, which Firth said was to create in concert experience.
Representation - Throughout this video i think that youth have been represented, as its very immature and they all happy, jumping around with no care.
Enigma - Enigma is created instantly, because there is so much going on, but its all happening without reason, so the audience are posing questions as to what the video is actually about.
Attract Audience - The craziness and quirkiness of the video instantly attracts their target audience and also the pace of everything that happens and the uniqueness.
Images of Band/Artist - The band are shown consistently throughout this video, which suggests that their appearance in their videos in important to them.
