The Kooks - ‘Inside In Inside Out'
Throughout the whole design of the album only three colours have been used, which are black, white and red. A bold, red font has been used to help make the album name stand out against the monochrome background. Furthermore, the red and black words contrast against each other as both can connote very different things, which would draw their target audience’s attention to the band name.
Front Cover
Image - From the cover we can already tell that their main focus is on the music and not on their appearance. This is because all of the band members in the image are shown looking away from the camera and looking more towards their instruments. This suggests to the audience that their main focus is the music. This helps to create the image of a hardworking band that aren't overly confident.
On the cover the band are all seen to be wearing casual clothes. They are all wearing skinny jeans and have floppy indie style hair which helps to reinforce their indie credentials. They are shown in a mid shot to ensure that all the band are visible and identifiable. No other props other than their instruments have been used, again suggesting that their focus is solemnly on the music.
Copy - The same typography has been used throughout the whole album , because it not only looks more effective but keeps a consistent style. A simple white background has been used along with a black and white image of the band. They have done this to help reinforce the idea that their music is more important. The font used is written in block style, again keeping it simple, like the rest of the album, suggesting that the kooks are a simplistic band. The title of the album is written in red helping it to stand out against the black and white, drawing the audience's attention.
Target Audience - Due to the image of the band i think that the target audience for this band would be teenagers to young adults.
Tagline/Title - On this particular album cover no taglien has been used because the colours will help to grab the audience's attention.
Representation - I think that youth have been represented on this album cover due to the steroetypical image of the present youth in the indie scene.
Enigma - The fact the album cover is mainly in black and white, apart from the title causes enigma, as this allows the audience to make up their own mind about them and their music.
Images of Band/Artist presented - The band only have been used on the front cover with just their instruments for props creating a simplistic look.
Right inlay - This side also follows the black and white theme with the use of red showing different film strips of the band being 'silly'. This helps to reinforce the representation of youth.
Left Inlay - Another black and white photo have been used of the band , to keep consistency with the rest of the album however, they are not using direct mode of address, perhaps to make the audience feel more involved and to create a relationship with the audience now that they have opened the cd. Big bold writing has then been written over the photo spelling the word ' out' creating a direct link with the front cover, again giving consistency with the rest of the album.
Back Cover
On the back cover another black and white image has been used however, this one is blurred suggesting that they are perhaps a newish band that people don't currently know that well. It is again very simplistic and is consistent with the rest of the album. The track listings are placed at the side neatly in the same font as the rest of the typography. This immediately creates a relationship with the audience as it's more personal and let's the audience know that they have made all the songs themselves.
Like all albums a barcode has been used at the top along with the record label logo, the producer, website details and copyright notice etc. This also uses the same typography as the rest of the album.
